It's in the nature of the treasure hunter, always to be wanting 'more'. We all want to find 'more', which is why we're doing the hobby in the first place. That's why depth has become the most important feature of the detector - so you can reach down and find the treasure which eludes other detectors. This is where the CS5MX comes in. It's a highly tuned electronic instrument, totally focussed on maximum depth

If you're looking for maximum depth from a detector, do remember your detecting technique. I see plenty of detectorists swinging their detectors 4 or 5 inches off the ground. They will never know what they're missing!

Field testing the CS5MX is a real joy compared to other brands of highly tuned detectors. With the CS5MX the power is totally useable, not 'jittery' and full of false signals like some machines. Balance is an important feature in this class of machine and I like the way the battery box counterbalances the search-head. It all goes to make the CS5MX feel precise, powerful and ready to do a professional job

Battery power for the CS5MX comes from 8 x AA batteries. Duracells are best. I don't know why but they always seem to make the detector signal more 'punchy', like high octane fuel in your car. As with all the best detectors, the CS5MX is 'switch-on-and-go' so it's switch on and turn it up to the threshold point which suits you best. That's all there is to it. The CS5MX is extremely responsive and signals from small coin sized non-ferrous objects have a characteristic ring to them. The 2 channel discrimination system is just about the easiest to understand of any detector I’ve tested (which is just about every one on the market). I like to set the first channel on about number 2 so that small iron objects are ignored, and the second channel higher depending on what sort of rubbish is around. You switch between the channels with a push-button. Next comes the feature which depth enthusiasts will enjoy the Power Boost. Switch it on and it delivers maximum energy to the search head – taking depth penetration to the outer limits of physics!

VERDICT

Everything about the CS5MX feels right. It’s a classic high performance detector at a price which won’t break the bank. Easy to use means it’s easy to get maximum performance out of the detector. Magic!
